I’m sure for many, a film based on the life of this anti-social chess champion, that takes place in the 1960’s & 70’s, won’t be a viewing choice. But as I’ve said in previous film reviews, I’m a fan of history and this era kind of struck close to home.

In the early 70’s I was 11, 12 years old when Fischer was at the height of his career, playing these “Cold war” Chess Tournaments. I know it may be difficult to comprehend, if you weren’t around then, but chess became insanely popular! Really, everyone was playing. I got hooked, received my first chess board (I still have it) and even joined the chess club. I was never really that good at the game, but I enjoyed playing it.

So in a way, I have Fischer to thank for introducing me and allowing me to have a life long love of the game.

Here’s a photo of that first chess board I mentioned. “Renaissance Chessmen with Board”. Over 40 years old and it’s still in great shape. Well, except for the box.
