Daily Comic Journal: December 9, 2021: “Scan And Go!”
I’ve been using self checkouts, when they’re available, for several decades. I don’t mind. I’m a single guy, so I don’t normally purchase as much as a family would. It’s easy for me to use these self checkouts and I don’t mind at all (in fact, even when I pay for my purchase at a staffed checkout I’ll normally help the cashier by bagging my groceries). I always like to get through these as quickly as possible.
If there are people who don’t like using them, that’s fine. I can understand. BUT, once they start spouting off about it taking away jobs, I can’t remain quiet. As far as I can tell, when I go to stores, grocery stores, fast food restaurants, etc… that have self checkouts, they ALL still have a bunch of help wanted signs. If they were taking away jobs, they wouldn’t be begging for workers.
Mom and I always butt heads about that. She and my uncle are anti self checkout because “they take jobs away from people” and I PREFER self checkouts. I HATE checking out at Walmart via cashier except for big grocery run day and days I legit feel like garbage and am barely standing. Even then it’s more of a “what other choice do I have” situation
It’s basically non lethal Russian roulette. I either get a cashier that’s either not chatty, which I want, or one that is a jabber jaws. By the time I’m checking out I’m exhausted, pissed off at the world due to greedflation, and my back that I screwed up 2.5 years ago is killing me from stress. Plus I’m also mega introverted and am not a people person
Though mom and I do agree there’s a particular Walmart we aren’t crazy about. It’s half self checkouts and the cashier part is either never open or only one or two open. We don’t really use that one much because theres 2 better options in about the same driving distance.
