In 1985 I was living in Attleboro, Massachusetts, which is right across the border of Rhode Island. Hurricane Gloria was making her way up the eastern coast line. Having grown up in the Pittsburgh area I’d never had to be concerned with hurricanes, so I got up for work that morning (I was working at Hasbro, which is in Pawtucket, Rhode Island at the time) and drove in. The roads were oddly empty and when I crossed the border I was told that Rhode Island was closed! I turned around and drove home. On the way I saw homes with “X”‘s taped over windows and saw crowds leaving grocery stores ( I assumed buying as much as they could carry). There was a feeling everywhere of impending doom. That’s how it felt driving here and around the hotel today.
