On the positive side, I guess I could say, hey it’s great, I got this windfall of money so I can pay off this new Hot Water Heater and in a sense, it won’t cost me anything.
Or I can think. Damn I had this windfall of money, and now it’s gone.
In another sense, it cost you by giving the government an interest-free loan of your money instead of letting it work for you (e.g., IRA contribution). I know, I know – I’ve heard all the excuses people have for over-withholding taxes from their paycheck. Regardless, it has cost the taxpayer all year if they’re getting a big return. Just sayin’.
