I realize there’s a big ruckus on social media these day about self-checkouts taking away jobs from human checkouts and while I was working on this comic I began to remember…

When I was a kid I recall going to the grocery store, or  a K-Mart or any retailer and watching as the cashier would look at the price tag, then punch in the actual price on the cash register. That machine would then add the prices up, finally giving the total. They would actually have to do math work and make sure to punch in the correct prices. But, thanks to the creation of the UPC code (which began in 1974) all they need to do now is scan the item’s code and the machine does the rest. One could argue that the beginning of the automated cashier began nearly 50 years ago.

All that being said, there’s no excuse for the cashiers at this Shop ‘N Save to not be aware that on Wednesday’s many customers will be shopping on that specific day because of the $5 coupon.

And yes, I’ve encountered this problem before (as seen in this comic from 11/10/21).
